The Childs' Cottage Rental

Owner's description

Our cottage is 10 minutes off the main highway, and the little town of Lyndhurst, ON. The last mile is over a narrow, winding dirt road. There are other cottages nearby, but we enjoy a fairly private location. Lower Beverly Lake is known for great fishing. There are 19 fish species in the lake, with small and largemouth bass and northern pike the most notable from a sport fisher's standpoint. Despite heavy fishing pressure, the success rate is very good to excellent. An annual testimony to this fact can be seen on the bulletin board at Wing's Bait Shop in Lyndhurst.

There is a small convenience store and a tiny grocery store in Lyndhurst. A full-size "country" grocery store is 15 minutes away in Delta, ON. The cottage has full running water, but we use bottled water for drinking. The running water is fine for cooking and drinking, but most folks don't like the taste. (A hint of sulfur, as is common with hard water.)

The bathroom is very small but has a shower and a full size washer and dryer. There is also an outside shower. (Wear your bathing suit, we don't want the neighbors complaining!)

We have a nice swimming raft anchored out in front of the cottage. The swimming is great, but there are weeds in close to shore, so we use the rowboat to go back and forth. Or if you don't mind the weeds, just swim on out! The raft has a small set of stairs that lower into the water, so big and small, old and young can easily get out of the water and up onto the raft.

There are 2 canoes and 2 kayaks available. The rowboat has a very old 4 Hp outboard motor, which usually works fine, but can be finicky. If you are comfortable with it, you can use it to get around our end of the lake for fishing. (We have some fishing rods and miscellaneous tackle available.) There is a tiny sand beach, which is great for the little kids. There is also a screened in gazebo, which makes a great place to play cards in the evening. We run a "mosquito magnet" all summer long, and during the day, bugs are not a problem. In the evening, they can be annoying, but usually it's not bad.

The tourist towns of Brockville, ON (pop. 20,000) and Gananoque, ON (pop. 10,000) are both about 40 minutes away, on the St. Lawrence River and the 1000 Islands. The city of Kingston, ON (pop. 50,000) is about an hour away, and the city of Ottawa, On., the nation's capital, is about an hour and a half away.
